Totally deep, man.
I feel like this entry should be epic. We are back in Iowa City and the void of road-trip-less-ness is huge. It’s weird not to be spending kilowatts of brain energy figuring out where north/the nearest coffee shop is, weird not to ever motor over 75 mph with a Sony boombox on my lap, weird not to wake up to Carolyn’s sweet little sleep-deprived face in the morning, weird not to be constantly...
Eastward Ho(me) + DONUTSDONUTSDONUTS!!!!
First off, sorry for falling off the face of the earth. Yes, our trip has concluded; yes we are back in town; YES I WANNA HANG OUT!
Staying with my family in Coos Bay was wonderful and a much needed rest as I was able to regain my health, spend time with my Uncle and Cousin and also meet my Uncles’ lovely lovely girlfriend Angie and her kids Audrey and Grant. Really, your hospitality was so...
Stop and smell the (city of) roses
Our stop in Coos Bay was relaxing and invigorating and beachy and yummy and filled with family. (Also filled with sticky sea creature that were see-through and jelly-textured and named interesting things like “Scoopy” and “Deady,” but I’ll let CMA’s upcoming beach pix tell you more about that.) Even though I had never met any of Carolyn’s extended family,...
To make a long story short...
We’re really getting hang of this on the road thing. Six hours of driving feels like a breeze, our pouring-coffee-while-changing-cassettes-and-adjusting-the-rearview-mirror technique is totally refined, and we think nothing of navigating through dense and ultra-complicated cities or through unmarked little roadside groupings of gas stations and dilapidated homes. Things have gotten faster,...
From a golden gate to the Golden Gate; the Gold...
After painting Wes’ Aunt’s fence door to match the GB, we took off for San Francisco. Nelle drove through some pretty thick fog before we decided to camp for the night.
The next day it was still foggy along the Pacific Coast Highway but cleared off a bit and by the time we reached Big Sur it had lifted enough for us to see that it was FALL! Kept trekking on and by nightfall we were...

Living off the land(scape)
Ever since my mom and sister and I started about 8 years ago, I have loved camping. Now, sure, my kind of camping tends to include sleeping in a tent right next to the car and the bathrooms and the showers and the little store that sells firewood and postcards and snickers bars, but still… I love stumbling around in the dark with a flashlight and eating turkey sandwiches and things half-warm...
Black + BlueBerry...
…Or maybe it’s just a lemon. I would have called this post “Tech Problems III” but at the risk of getting redundant let’s just say I’m taking care of it.
L Dot A Dot has been good to us. Yesterday we set up outside of OTIS college, talked to some students and sold a scarf before the LAPD *kindly* asked us to remove ourselves from city property in order to...

Sunglasses not optional.
After listening to Carolyn belting out California themed songs for the last 9 days, I could hardly be more excited to have reached this oft-lyricized-about state. We arrived in the dead of night, probably missing out on some sweet views, but it made the next morning’s walk out to the car for my toothbrush pretty amazing. Imagine the sun going down when you’re in the hot prickly desert...
I feel like I’m in an 80’s t-shirt.
– Carolyn, watching a misty teal and magenta San Diego sunset.
Driving like madwimmin.
So all this talk we’ve been talkin’ of being the desert? We had no idea. Last night we discovered the DESERT. Like, sand dunes and sand sand sandy sand as far as the eye can see. Which was not actually thaaaaat far, since it was totally nighttime when we got there. But, we could see big sweeps of sand dune with our headlights when we rounded the curves and we stopped at one point for...
“It looks like these cacti are flipping me off…”
And with that we’ve left the desert and posted up in San Diego with friend Bill and roommate Greg. Greg was generous enough to let me borrow his surf board for a bit today and Bill was kind enough to give me a little bit of instruction on the more technical aspects of surfing (i.e. how to not have a board hit you in the face)…
The drive from Tucson was beautiful, although I quickly realized why...

Tech Problems, Part II:
I may have spoken too soon about the infallibility of the Gold Beast. It seems like the curb/cliff I decided to launch off of in Phoenix may have done more damage than previously thought. Hopefully not anything too serious but we’ve decided to stay in Tucson at least for now to make sure the right front tire does not fall off en route to San Diego…
Which is fine because we are staying with my...
Technical jargon
As you may have noticed, to the right of these posts (under the haiku), is our email and a call for addresses– we want to send postcards, but have no idea where anyone lives except our grandpas.
You can comment on posts now! Yay me and my rudimentary html knowledge. Commenting on pictures is still not an option, sorry Wes. Maybe we’ll eventually change the program we use for photos (any...
Fleeing Phoenix
After two days we fled Phoenix for the North. Thank you thank you to Lucy + Nathan for putting us up and Hannah H. for stopping to say hello outside of the farmer’s market on our first day. Your email meant a lot to me – we seem to share the same passion for thrifting and it was a great boost three days into our trip. We will definitely look you up next time we are in town.
On our way to the...
The day before the Best. Day. Ever.
Judging by the lack of in-city photos, one may think Phoenix was not a photogenic place, but this is not true. It’s just that we were so busy decorating for Halloween with Carolyn’s (and my new) friend Lucy at whose apartment we stayed, zooming around like characters in a video game on the highways, eating delish Turkish food/belly dancing, and having our FIRST POISON APPLE THRIFT...
Sort of out of chronological order, but...
Day two on the road was a total success. Carolyn KILLED it driving, taking the whole day behind the wheel. It gave me a chance to take plenty of photos with my (much-lower-quality-than-CMAH’s) camera, and exciting!exciting! to start doing some on-the-road video blogging.
We are in a weird place with our technology right now. I have the video camera but I don’t have the right battery, so it has to...
